Shopify gets a reputation — not entirely deserved — as either effortlessly SEO-friendly or quietly broken for SEO, depending on who you ask. The real answer is more specific: Shopify automates several things well, leaves a few real gaps, and the stores that struggle are almost always falling into the same handful of predictable traps rather than hitting some fundamental platform limitation.

What Shopify genuinely handles for you

  • ◆Sitemap generation. Automatic, always up to date, no app or configuration needed — genuinely one less thing to worry about compared to most other platforms.
  • ◆Canonical tags. Shopify sets these automatically across collection/product URL variations, which meaningfully reduces (though doesn't eliminate) duplicate-content risk from a product appearing in multiple collections.
  • ◆HTTPS and clean URLs. Every store gets SSL by default, and the URL structure (/products/product-name) is reasonably clean without any manual configuration.
  • ◆Mobile responsiveness. Virtually every modern Shopify theme is responsive by default, which handles the baseline mobile-usability signal without separate work.

What you still have to do yourself

Product schema and rich snippets

Shopify doesn't universally guarantee complete Product schema (price, availability, aggregate rating) across every theme — coverage varies significantly by theme, and even where it exists it's worth verifying rather than assuming. Spot-check your actual product pages with a JSON-LD syntax reviewer rather than trusting theme marketing copy.

Image optimization

Shopify's CDN serves images reasonably well, but it won't automatically convert everything to modern formats like WebP or AVIF, and it certainly won't write your alt text — that's entirely on you, per product, and it's one of the most commonly skipped steps on stores with large catalogues where writing unique alt text for hundreds of SKUs feels like a chore nobody gets around to.

Duplicate and thin product content

The platform's biggest real SEO weakness isn't technical — it's that the default workflow makes it extremely easy to launch products with manufacturer-supplied descriptions, identical to every other store selling the same item. Shopify won't flag this for you; see our full e-commerce SEO checklist for the complete fix, but the short version is: unique copy on every product page is still the single highest-leverage manual task.

App bloat and page speed

Shopify's app ecosystem is a genuine strength for functionality and a genuine liability for speed — each installed app typically adds its own JavaScript, and stores with ten or fifteen apps installed (not unusual) often carry meaningfully slower load times than the platform's baseline would suggest. Periodically auditing installed apps against what's actually providing value is worth doing specifically for this reason.

Blog and content SEO

Shopify's blog feature is functional but basic, and it's common for stores to under-invest in content entirely, missing an entire category of ranking opportunity (buying guides, comparison content, how-tos) that pure product pages can't capture on their own.

Tip Check your theme's robots.txt.liquid file specifically if your store has grown organically — default settings are sensible for most stores, but a theme customization or inherited setup from a previous developer can sometimes leave overly broad rules in place without anyone noticing.

Running your own check

Rather than guessing which of the above apply to your specific store and theme, our free Shopify SEO checker runs a live scan against your store — on-page checks, AI-search readiness, and Shopify-specific signals like product schema presence and image format — in one pass.
