A full technical SEO audit on a large site can take days. Most sites don't need that to find the issues actually holding them back — the problems that account for the bulk of real-world underperformance are a short, predictable list, and you can check every one of them in about half an hour using nothing but free tools. Here's the order that catches the most, fastest.
1. Can it actually be crawled and indexed? (5 minutes)
Start here because nothing else matters if the answer is no. Pull up your homepage and two or three key inner pages in our indexability checker — it checks HTTP status, meta robots, canonical tag and robots.txt rules in one pass and tells you plainly whether each page is eligible to be indexed at all. This catches the single most damaging category of issue: a page that's otherwise perfect but technically invisible to search engines.
2. Is the robots.txt sane? (3 minutes)
Paste the site's robots.txt into our robots.txt tester and check a few key paths against both * and a couple of named crawlers. You're looking for one specific failure mode: an overly broad Disallow rule blocking something important, or (less commonly but more severely) a stray rule blocking the entire site.
3. Does the sitemap check out? (3 minutes)
Run the sitemap URL (usually /sitemap.xml) through our sitemap validator. You're checking entry count against what you'd expect for the site's actual size, and scanning for invalid entries — a sitemap full of broken URLs or stale lastmod dates is a reliable sign of a site that hasn't had its technical SEO maintained in a while.
4. What does the full site audit flag? (10 minutes)
This is where the bulk of the real signal comes from. Our AI Website X-Ray runs Core Web Vitals, accessibility, SEO and AI-search readiness checks in one pass, plus an AI-generated UX critique — genuinely the fastest way to get a comprehensive first read on a site's technical health without running five separate tools by hand. Pay particular attention to performance scores on mobile specifically; that's where most real-world traffic actually experiences a site.
5. Any broken links on the key pages? (5 minutes)
Run the homepage through the broken link checker. A handful of broken links on a large, old site is normal and low-priority; a significant number on a homepage or other high-traffic page is a sign of either a recent migration gone wrong or simply neglected maintenance — worth noting either way.
6. Is structured data present and correct? (3 minutes)
Spot-check a key page — a product, a service, an article — for schema markup using our JSON-LD syntax reviewer. Missing structured data on commercial pages is extremely common and is one of the fastest wins on this entire list: adding valid Product, LocalBusiness or Article schema where it's absent is usually a same-day fix with our schema generator.
7. Does AI know this brand exists? (optional, 2 minutes)
If AI-search visibility matters for the business, a quick check with our AI visibility checker shows whether live AI models recognize the brand at all — a genuinely new and increasingly relevant data point that a traditional SEO audit from even two years ago wouldn't have included.
Tip Write down every issue as you find it with a rough effort estimate (minutes, hours, or "needs scoping"), not just a list of problems. A 30-minute audit's real value is the prioritized list it produces, not the audit itself — an unprioritized pile of 40 issues is nearly as unhelpful as no audit at all.
What this audit won't catch
Half an hour of automated checks will not evaluate content quality, keyword strategy, backlink profile strength, or competitive positioning — all of which matter as much or more than the technical checklist above, and all of which take genuine expertise and time to assess properly. Treat this as triage: a fast way to find and fix the technical issues that are actively holding a site back, before investing in the deeper strategic work.
If the audit turns up more than a handful of significant issues, or you'd rather have the full picture assessed and fixed by people who do this daily, our SEO services start with exactly this kind of comprehensive review — get in touch and we'll take it from here.
